ABOUT THIS WORK

Recollecting my thoughts in December 2017, I was intent on finding a deeper understanding of my own Blackness. Admittedly a convoluted and indefinable narrative. To start, I investigated my role in the marriage between history and color. The process was broken up with laughter amongst friends and family, thumbing through Malcolm Gladwell's "Outliers" and slinking off to snap photos, while doing my best to be both mindful and present.

I stepped outside this particular day and sensed a precursory energy that laid in the wind. Each inhale consisted of textures from the past and a vastness that soon overwhelmed my spirit. A feeling of familiar unfamiliarity, to which I drew my conclusions from. This was an extension of the past, an extension of Blackness that preceded me, which outdated the very etymology of the word and came straight from the soil. The imagery here represents the core of my faint, yet perceptible relationship the Blackness that predates me.

Justified by adapting the rich green of the environment to deep indigo. Communicating a vision of otherworldliness. Leaving reality to the imagination for those willing to seek it out. The trees of Kakum National Forest, as seen from a canopy, taken in December 2017. Shot on location in Central Region, Ghana on a 35mm Film SLR.

Faint /fānt/

  1. Hardly perceptible.

  2. To lose consciousness because of a temporary decrease in the blood supply to the brain.

  3. Lacking brightness, vividness, clearness, loudness, strength, etc.
